How to play

Choose Computer or Two players, then take a seat. Tap a piece and a highlighted destination, or drag the piece. White moves first. Protect your king and checkmate your opponent. Use Hint for a suggestion, Undo to take back a turn, and Flip to change your view. Choose queen, rook, bishop, or knight when a pawn reaches the far rank.

Controls

  • Mouse or touch: tap a piece and its destination, or drag a piece
  • Arrow keys: explore squares; Enter or Space: select a piece or destination
  • Hint: suggest a legal move; Undo: take back your turn and the computer reply
  • Flip: rotate the board; New game: choose another match
  • P / Escape or pause button: pause; sound button: enable or mute move sounds

Tips

  • Develop your knights and bishops before moving the same piece repeatedly.
  • Keep your king safe and look for checks, captures, and threats.
  • Highlighted squares are legal moves, but they are not always safe from capture.

About Oak & Ivory

A quiet room for classical chess, with a warm wooden board and sculpted ivory and oak pieces. Choose a casual, club, or challenger computer opponent, or share the same device with a friend. Legal move highlights, hints, an undo button, and a full scoresheet make it easy to explore a position. Castling, en passant, all four promotions, checkmate, and draw detection follow standard chess rules. Your game is saved when browser storage is available. There is no timer.
